Description

A laparoscopic Veress needle is a specialized access device used to create pneumoperitoneum at the start of minimally invasive abdominal surgery. It is designed to safely enter the peritoneal cavity and allow controlled insufflation of carbon dioxide, giving surgeons the working space they need for laparoscopic procedures.

The instrument consists of a sharp outer needle and a spring-loaded inner stylet with a blunt tip. When the needle passes through the abdominal wall, the blunt stylet automatically advances beyond the sharp point, helping to reduce the risk of injury to underlying organs. A proximal connector allows attachment to the insufflator tubing so gas can be delivered immediately after correct placement is confirmed.

Key features and benefits:

  • Spring-loaded safety stylet designed to protect internal organs once the cavity is entered

  • Sharp, tapered needle for smooth penetration through tissue layers

  • Depth markings on the shaft to guide safe insertion

  • Luer-lock type connector for secure attachment to insufflation tubing

  • Lightweight, balanced handle for good tactile feedback and control

  • Supplied sterile and intended for single use, helping maintain high infection-control standards

Typical applications:

  • General laparoscopic surgery, including cholecystectomy and hernia repair

  • Gynaecologic procedures such as laparoscopy for infertility, cystectomy or hysterectomy

  • Urologic and bariatric surgery where pneumoperitoneum is required

Compared with open access techniques, the Veress needle offers a fast, familiar and minimally invasive method of entering the abdomen with only a tiny skin puncture. When used by trained surgeons following established safety protocols, it provides reliable cavity access, consistent gas flow and reduced operative time. Manufactured from medical-grade materials and designed to withstand standard hospital handling, the laparoscopic Veress needle is a fundamental tool in modern minimally invasive surgery.
